3,000 Imo Opposition Members Did Not Defect to Your Party – PDP Mocks APC

April 26, 2023

Press Statement

… Says Defectors’ “followers” are Staged APC members, hirelings

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State describes the reported defection of 3,000 opposition members to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State as another menu in the series of lies and falsehood concocted by the fizzling APC in the desperation to create an impression that the APC is still alive in the State.

Our Party has checked through our registers in all the wards in Imo State and can report unequivocally that none of our members except three rejected and politically spent individuals, who have lost all electoral relevance in the State and only fit for a political dustbin like the APC.

It is indeed pathetic that such empty deserters connived with some APC leaders in Imo State to swindle the jittery and desperate Governor Hope Uzodimma, at very huge cost, by gathering a crowd of known APC members, thugs and hirelings and presented them to Governor Uzodimma as defectors from opposition parties in the State.

Credible intelligence at our disposal indicates that the APC leaders have also planned more of such sham mass defections just to create an impression that the people of Imo State are gravitating towards the APC. Truth is that Imo people have come to a firm decision that Governor Uzodinma is that proverbial rotten tooth which must be removed for the cheeks to chew with ease.

That Governor Uzodimma could fall for such cheap political gimmick to the extent of showboating on national television further exposes that he and his Party, the APC have lost grip and merely clinging at straws, being in mortal fear of imminent electoral defeat in the November 11, 2023 governorship election in Imo State due to their litany of failures in governance.

This comical orchestration further shows that the APC in Imo State has been in confusion, frenzy and distress since the emergence of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the Governorship candidate of the PDP for the November 11, 2023 governorship election.

Such apprehension explains why the APC has now embarked on desperate endorsement shopping for Governor Uzodimma from compromised individuals and groups; a ploy that has rather diminished the APC in the eyes of the people of Imo State.

Instead of addressing its numerous failures in governance, which resulted in escalated insecurity, killings, violence, collapse of productive sector, massive treasury looting, terrible infrastructural stagnation and agonizing economic hardship in the State in the last four years, the APC is shamelessly resorting to endorsement shopping and diversionary antics that have no bearing to the wellbeing of the people of Imo State.

The APC in Imo State must realize that the people of the State are not looking back in their determination to rescue and take back their State from anti-democratic forces and not even the intimidation, defection gimmicks and endorsement procurement by the APC can sway them in this resolve.

The people of Imo State yearn for the return of the glorious days of the legendry Dee Sam Mbakwe and they have found the Sun rising in that direction with the emergence of Senator Sam Anyanwu as the Governorship candidate of the PDP.

Senator Anyanwu’s candidature embodies the aspiration of the people of Imo State for a humane, responsive, friendly, transparent, purposeful, equitable and people-driven government that will restore security, happiness and productivity in the State.

The PDP therefore counsels the APC to accept its fate and use the remaining months left in its abysmal administration to account for its despicable misrule that has brought Imo State to its current pathetic condition.

Omo-Agege felicitates Senator-elect, Joel-Onowakpo on his 56th birthday

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has congratulated Chief Joel-Onowakpo Thomas on his 56th birthday. Chief Thomas was one time chairman of the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue.

Describing him as a dedicated leader, seasoned Chartered Accountant, business consultant, entrepreneur, politician and astute manager of both human and material resources, the Deputy Senate President expressed delight that Joel-Onowakpo will be bringing his sterling expertise on the economy to the Senate having emerged victorious as the Delta South Senator-elect in the February 25, 2023 National Assembly election.

“Having put the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue on a high pedestal as it’s chairman, it is cheery that he is going to the Red Chambers. I have no doubt he will bring quality contributions and direction to the efforts to reform Nigeria’s tax administration to create a more clement environment for businesses”, Omo-Agege said.

According to a statement issued by Sunny Areh, Chief Press Secretary to Omo-Agege who is also the gubernatorial flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the March 18, 2023 election in Delta State, Nigeria is lucky to have him in the Senate at a time the nation’s economy needs a new direction under President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In 2009, Joel-Onowakpo was appointed the Executive Chairman, Delta State Board of Internal Revenue at a time the state government was in dire need of a man to champion her vision of diversifying the economy.

His performance led to the impressive rise in the revenue base of the state from less than N1 billion to about N5.74 billion monthly, which further endeared him to then Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, who decided to return him to the Board after his first tenure which ended June 24, 2013.

He has at various times served the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria in different capacities such as Membership and Professional Conduct and Building committees. He has also served as Chairman, Technical Appraisal Committee and FS&GPC of Joint Tax Board (JTB) Tax Identification Number (TIN) Project.

RE: PETER OBI’S ANIMAL FARM (PART 1&2)

By Erasmus Ikhide

THE above titled articles, serialized in The Nigeria Punch Newspaper recently, authored by one Mr Tunde Odesola, comes with the imprint of genocidal slur. The trend has dominated the chant of ethnic cleansing in the South West and several other parts of the country towards the run up to February 25th and March 18th, 2023 general elections that has substantially widened ethnic gap between Nigerian citizens’ of different folks.

The issues in the said articles, penned down by Tunde Odesola, in solidarity with Professor Wole Soyinka’s jaded point of view on the Datti-Soyinka fascism debacle, and the terrible crime scenes, signposted as the 2023 general elections, accentuates what the global community is already acquainted with – except the naysayers like the writer of the piece, who thrives in ethnic tirades remained what it is – unforced error of the head and heart.

Obidient Movement welcomes the likes of Tunde Odesola into APC/Tinubu’s caves and cervan, as long as they are at home with distortions of facts and history, solely in their favour. Nigerians are not moved and it doesn’t removed the fact that those of us who refused to be cowed or conscripted into that contraction are obligated to buy into their hogwash. Nigerians and the international community knew that the elections were ‘war’ in every sense of the word.

Now this: Tunde Odesola’s two main accusations against Mr Peter Obi are that he avoided discussing Datti Baba Ahmed interview, where Senator Datti said ‘Nigeria will be ending democracy if the litigations hanging around the neck of Bola Amhed Tinubu in the law courts are not fully exhausted to the logical conclusion’. The second accusation is that Peter Obi did not tell the world the totality of his conversation with Bishop David Oyedipo in the doctored telephone interaction of “yes daddy” fame, where he allegedly said the election was a religious war.

Mr Odesola and his teaming ethnic propagandists have been speaking from both sides of their mouths since Senator Datti Baba Amhed live interview was aired. While a section of the APC/Tinubu’s media team are accusing the Labour Party and Peter Obi of heating up the political space over Datti Baba Amhed’s interview with the Channels Television, the rest are asking Mr Peter Obi to seek political asylum in foreign land to avoid political tension. In the United Kingdom where they have been advocating he seeks asylum, they went ahead to embarrass Mr Peter Obi with the compromised UK airport security agencies. So much for political reprobates for exposing their kidagattern style of media management.

While this was going on, Nigerians were expecting the likes Tunde Odesola, Festus Keyamo, Femi Fani-Kayode and the rest of the APC/Tinubu’s ethnic champions to explain to the world what Bola Amhed Tinubu meant when he said in a leaked video that “you fight for power, grab power, and run with it”?. If Tinubu could stick with Muslim-Muslulim ticket in a multi-ethnic nation like Nigeria and boastfully echoed, “it is my turn and the Yoruba’s turn”; even in his incoherent gaffing garbage, a man who cannot write his name twice without making mistakes, I wonder what else will suffocate hack writers like Odesola?

We’re all living witnesses to how town criers were deployed to the streets of Lagos, warning foreigners to remain indoors on the days of elections, to avoid the raw wrath of Eyo festival and all the other dreaded masquerades in Lagos State. In totality, conservative analyses gave the figures on how 109 hapless citizens paid the ultimate price with their lives; their souls grounded to the dust with no known offenses committed, apart from the vested hope for a new Nigeria and the outright rejection of the cynicism that a new Nigeria is not possible.

Prof. Wole Soyinka’s offensive outburst and the abuse of language labelled “fascism and fascists” attributions to the Obidient Movement is truly tragic and unfortunate. Firstly, Prof. Soyinka did violence to the use of language for deliberately addressing the Obidient adherents as nitwits and fascists. Prof. Soyinka’s wrongful allocation of such debasing, demeaning and worst of all, dehumanizing appellations to the mass of Nigerian youths, who are angry and hungry for a new Nigeria in a democracy; who are rooting for the extrication from the given asphyxiation, the muffling of citizens’ voices, reduces his status as the ‘Conscience of the Nation’.

Fascism – in its actuality which was started by Benito Musolini in Italy – means hate and hatred at its extremity against other ethnic groups by tyrants in power from another ethnic background. Fascism is a way of organizing a society in which a government ruled by a dictator who controls the lives of the people and in which people are not allowed to disagree with the government in power. In Nigeria, Labour Party or Obidient Movement is not a government and are not in possession of instrument of coercion. This is Prof. Soyinka’s error and terror of the usage of the word ‘fascists’.

Prof. Wole Soyinka should have covertly rein in his ethnic intuitive radar; allowed the charades, lacerations of people’s bodies, and the actual killings of Igbo in Lagos and elsewhere in the South West to slide for refusing to vote APC/Tinubu in the elections. Striving to make abhorrent, incoherent defense; slopping and narrow appeasement in order to isolate ethnic colouration from the outcome of the elections, to sullen the rapists of democracy, smacks of revisionism, knowing that citizens were bathed and soaked in blood in the presence of international elections observers.

What is hard and strange to believe is Prof. Wole Soyinka’s arrival into that ‘Hall of Shame’ of choreographed ethnic crime scenes, and for taking a position in favour of APC/Tinubu barbarity, and his decided failure to condemn and call them by their proper name, ‘fascists’. It is not lost on Nigerians that Prof. Wole Soyinka lost his voice throughout President Muhammandu Buhari/APC 8 years of the locust; yet he was one of the revolting stormy petrels who stood against President Goodluck Jonathan’s atrocious administration.

If Prof. Wole Soyinka could not denounce and condemn the procursors and enablers of fascists non-state actors like the Lagos chief-thug, Olu Omo, Mr Bayo Onaguga with menacing genocidal instincts; who released threatening videos that they will kill the Igbos and non-natives on the cyber space for being Obidient adherents in ‘foreign land’ (Lagos), then the old Professor has come to the end of civilization! Since the security agencies blandly pick and choose what fugitive offenders should be arrested, prosecuted and punished for constitutional violations, then we’re at the tipping point of ending democracy. That is the point Senator Datti Baba Amhed, the Labour Party’s Vice Presidential candidate was making.

As the axiom in my part of the world goes, history is useless if it is not usable yesterday, today and tomorrow. This is where Prof Soyinka’s history of his perceived injustice in elections heist in the past comes to the front burner. In 1956, Prof Soyinka invaded Radio House in Ibadan at gun point. He removed and replaced a running broadcasting tape with his own, denouncing the election results and announcing his own different election results for another political party he thought had won the election of that year.

The tragedy of Prof Soyinka’s banal destroy of history, and Mr Tunde Odesola’s adventure into APC/Tinubu’s Nazism, is the activation of the unwritten policy of the ruling elites consensus notoriety, and the dennounciation that we must forgot our history. It is the criminal tactics of waving around the cotton wools on the citizens’ faces, which suggests that, if we shut our eyes – like the kids, the tactile evidences of manipulation, deprivation, votes suppression – outright fraud, pure impunity and killings, that took place during and after the 2023 general elections would simply go away!

What Prof. Wole Soyinka dubbed fascism on the part of Obidient adherents by protesting the rape of their sovereign rights to participate in the governing process of their country, and the right to vote and to have the votes counted on the internet and social space, is nothing compared to that terrorizing episode of hijacking of a radio station, in Ibadan in 1956, except that we have become victims of our own collective misdeeds.

The likes of Prof. Wole Soyinka and his ethnic backers, namely; Tunde Odesola, Bayo Onaguga, Dele Alake and their kinds, for the indescribable orchestrated tyranny; and the scorched earth pogrom against a section of the country, can still be remonstrated for in the interest of posterity and humanity. The old Professor can’t simply afford to squander his legacy of rights protection – the taming of authoritarianism; rejection of pocket tyrants and barefaced terrorism, as witnessed in Lagos State in the last general elections – for a mere ethnic bowl of porridge! Is it not really sad that Prof. Wole Soyinka has descended into the lake of ethnic jingoists?

“Mr. Ayo Oyalowo has been a great asset to our party, the APC. Having people like Ayo in our party is indeed a blessing. At 50, Ayo Oyalowo has achieved a lot, and we remain grateful to the Almighty for his life.

“I, therefore, join the APC family to celebrate this intellectual and a great mind on his 50th birthday,” Gbajabiamila said.

The Speaker wished Mr. Ayo Oyalowo more fruitful years ahead in good health.

Eid-el-Fitr: Gbajabiamila felicitates Muslims, calls for unity

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila has rejoiced with Muslims across the country on the occasion of this year’s Eid-el-Fitr, marking the end of this year’s Ramadan.

Gbajabiamila also congratulated the Muslim faithful for the successful completion of the 1444/2023 Ramadan, in which he said lessons must have been learnt.

Reflecting on the significance of the just concluded Ramadan fasting, the Speaker said Muslims should internalize the lessons and good habits that usually come with the religious practice.

He called on Muslims across the country to use the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr to pray for the country.

Gbajabiamila noted that periods like this call for sober reflection and unity from all citizens irrespective of their religious beliefs.

The speaker said, “Nigeria is the only country we can call ours, hence the citizens, especially Muslims at this time, must work together and pray assiduously for continuous peaceful coexistence among the people.”

He noted that one of the lessons learnt during the holy month of Ramadan was that of compassion and care for the needy, urging Muslims to continue to be their brother’s keepers as enjoined by the Almighty Allah through the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Eid-el-Fitr: PDP Harps on Justice, National Regeneration

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) congratulates Nigerians, especially the Muslim Faithful on Eid-el-Fitr, the completion of the Holy Ramadan Fasting, urging them to use the occasion to pray and work towards the entrenchment of justice, equity, fairness and good governance in the country.

The Holy Ramadan offer our nation the divine opportunity for serious introspection especially on issues of the fear of God, integrity, accountability, adherence to set Rules and Constitutional Order as well as the respect for the rights, personal freedom and Will of the citizens in a democratic setting.

Nigerians, especially leaders must reflect on the essence of Ramadan and use the occasion to reawaken the virtues of selflessness, honesty, self-restrain, fair-mindedness, mutual respect, forgiveness, love and compassion for one another without regards to ethnic, sectional, religious or partisan considerations as this is the only way to achieve the much-desired politically stable and economically viable nation.

The PDP is deeply saddened that at a time such as this, Nigerians are still under siege by terrorists and subjected to a life of fear, misery, anguish, abject poverty and excruciating economic hardship occasioned by the inexcusable misrule of an incompetent, insensitive, heavily corrupt and manipulative leadership in the last eight years.

It is more saddening that efforts by Nigerians to instill a purposeful, honest and responsible leadership is being sabotaged by oppressive forces desperate to impose themselves against the Will of the people.

Our Party is however optimistic that with fervent prayers to God and determination of the citizens, our nation will triumph in the collective quest to entrench a God-fearing leadership that is derived from the free Will of the people as expressed at the polls.

The PDP therefore urges Nigerians to use the occasion of the Eid-el-Fitr to further strengthen the bond of unity, forgive, love and care for one another in the hope for a new dawn of a regenerated nation where peace, justice, Rule of Law, security, prosperity and happiness of citizens shall reign.

The PDP prays for the nation and wishes Nigerians a happy Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

WE’RE ALL HUMAN, PARDON ME WHERE I’VE HURT YOU, PRESIDENT BUHARI TELLS NIGERIANS

At an occasion to mark his final outing as President on a Sallah Day, before handing over, President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday thanked Nigerians for the honour to serve for two terms, 2015-2023, asking for pardon from those he might have hurt while discharging his duties.

With less than 37 days left in office, the President recounted his leadership roles in the country for more than forty years, serving variously as a military officer, military governor, minister, and Head of State, and returning as a democratically elected President in 2015.

President Buhari told residents of the Federal Capital Territory led by the Minister, Muhammad Musa Bello, on Eid-el-Fitr Sallah homage, that his journey was not all smooth as he was incarcerated for three years, after the coup that ousted him from power in August, 1984, and contested elections three times, 2003, 2007 and 2011, without success.

“I dared the politicians and ended up at the Supreme Court three times. They laughed at me, and I responded, ‘God dey’. God sent technology to my rescue, with Permanent Voters’ Card (PVC). The fraudulent people became unemployed,” the President noted.

President Buhari said the flaunting of ethnic and religious cards in elections was “rubbish” as the presiding justices at the Supreme Court that squashed his cases were Muslims, from the North, Zaria in Kaduna State, Niger and Jigawa.

“It is good to reflect on what used to happen here, in FCT, especially on security. Security is not only about the North East, it also spread to the FCT and all over the country.

“Those who wanted to make our lives uncomfortable reached the FCT, and they have been marginalized,’’ he added.

President Buhari highlighted the strengths of democracy as a system of government, particularly in providing opportunity to participate, and fostering a sense of belonging among citizens.

“I have been counting the years. Democracy is good, otherwise how can someone come from one end of the country to rule for eight years. My home town, Daura, is about eight kilometres to Niger Republic.

“When the Minister of Interior wanted to shut down petrol stations ten kilometres from the border, there was a fuel station close to my house, and I pleaded if he could allow it to keep operating,” he added.

The President stated that he decided to retire to Daura, which was far away from Abuja in order to get some respite, after years of work.

“I can’t wait to go home to Daura. If they make any noise to disturb me in Daura, I will leave for the Niger Republic. I deliberately arranged to be as far away as possible. I got what I wanted and will quietly retire to my home town.

“In spite of technology, it will not be easy to get to Daura,” he said.

President Buhari said he accepted all the complaints and criticisms in good stead, knowing it was part of the leadership he prayed and asked from God.

“God gave me an incredible opportunity to serve the country. We are all humans, if I have hurt some people along the line of my service to the country, I ask that they pardon me.

“All those that I have hurt, I ask that they pardon me.”

President Buhari said he remains grateful to Nigerians, who voted him in 2015 and 2019, without any monetary incentive, with some trooping to the campaigns, and receptions in states just to catch a glimpse.

“I think it is a good coincidence for me to say goodbye to you, and thank you for tolerating me for almost eight years,” the President said.

In his remark, the Minister of FCT thanked the President for hosting residents for the 9th Eid-el-Fitr, and allowing more people into the Villa for the last homage, before his handing over on May 29th.

Bello said the conceptualization and realization of the FCT was historic and deserved commendation, reminding President Buhari of his role as part of the military Recce Team for the capital in the 70s.

The minister, accompanied by Umaru Shagalinku, the man who started one of the oldest restaurants in Abuja, and some contractors, thanked the President for the privilege of serving in the same position for close to eight years.

The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, SGF, Boss Mustapha, Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Senator Philip Aduda, and CAN Chairman in FCT, Rev. Timothy Amakum were also at the Sallah homage.

ON OUR DEMOCRACY, I HAVE NO FEARS, SAYS PRESIDENT BUHARI

NIGERIANS WILL DEFEND IT

President Muhammadu Buhari says the future of democracy as a system of government is bright, adding that as he prepares to leave office in a little over a month, he feels satisfied and duly assured that Nigerians will defend the system against all threats.

Speaking to reporters shortly after observing the Eid prayer, marking the end of the 30-day Ramadan fasting by Muslims, President Buhari said:

“Nigerians appreciate the stability of democracy. The outcome of the elections, in which more than ten governors failed to make it to the senate sent a clear message that ordinary Nigerians know the power of their votes and how to use it.

“Nigerians cherish democracy. They have shown their love for it and will defend it against real or perceived threats. They will continue to vote one way or the other depending on their preferences,” he stated.

President Buhari assured that the May 29th hand over date remains sacrosanct.

“God willing, nothing will stop it,” he added.

On His plans after leaving office, the President said he feels fulfilled that God had made it possible to serve two terms of four years each and looks forward to an orderly handover.

“I thank God for what He has done for me personally and for what He has enabled us to achieve.

“I am looking forward to returning to my town, to be as far away as I can from Abuja so that the in-coming President will have the time and the space to take decisions without my distracting him.”

Okowa sues for peace, tolerance

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has congratulated Muslims in the state, Nigeria and across the world on the occasion of the 2023 Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

In a statement on Friday in Asaba by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, Okowa urged all Muslim faithful to display the spiritual benefits of Ramadan, which are love, peace and justice, in their daily living and through this, contribute nation-building.

“I felicitate with all Nigerians, especially our Muslim brothers and sisters, on the occasion of this year’s Eid-el-Fitri celebrations.

“As we celebrate Eid-el-Fitri, it is my hope and prayer that Ramadan’s spiritual lessons and the Holy Prophet’s teachings of piety, love, justice, fairness, equity, peaceful co-existence with others, tolerance, honesty and dedication to duty will remain with us all for the benefit and greater glory of our dear nation.

“On behalf of my family, the government and people of Delta State, I extend our warmest wishes to Muslims celebrating Eid-el-Fitr in Delta State, Nigeria and around the world.

“As we celebrate across Nigeria, it is important to remind us of the importance of respecting the faiths and beliefs of all.

“I urge all Muslim faithful and every Nigerian to use the celebration for sober reflection and pray for peace, unity and progress of the nation as the country prepares for transition to new government at the centre and the states.

“May the lessons and blessings of the Holy Month also permeate all our activities and positively influence our attitudes towards our fellow countrymen and women, irrespective of religion or place of origin; and promote greater commitment to the peace, unity and stability of the nation.

“It is my hope that today brings joy to all homes, in Delta State, Nigeria and around the world,” he said.

Probe missing 149 million barrels of crude oil in 2019 or face legal action, SERAP tells Buhari

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to “set up a presidential panel of enquiry to promptly probe the grim allegations that over 149 million barrels of crude oil are missing, as documented in the 2019 audited reports by the Auditor General of the Federation and Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).”

SERAP also urged him to “ensure the effective prosecution of anyone suspected to be responsible for the plundering of the country’s oil wealth and the full recovery of any proceeds of crime.”

According to the 2019 audited report by the Auditor General over 107 million barrels of crude oil were lifted as domestic crude without any document or tracing. NEITI also reported missing 42.25 million barrels of crude oil in 2019.

In the letter dated 22 April 2023 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said: “There is a legitimate public interest in ensuring justice and accountability for these very serious allegations.”

SERAP said, “the recommended steps can be taken between now and the end of your term of office to set the tone for the next administration.”

The letter, read in part: “SERAP notes that you have repeatedly promised to combat corruption. As you go into the final weeks of your term of office, the missing crude oil allegations present yet another opportunity to demonstrate your commitment and to uphold your oath of office both as President and Minister of Petroleum Resources.”

“As the President and substantive Minister of Petroleum Resources, you and your government should prioritise getting to the bottom of these allegations and use the remainder of your term of office to ensure justice and accountability for these serious crimes against the Nigerian people.”

“Investigating the allegations and naming and shaming and prosecuting those suspected to be responsible for the missing crude oil would serve the public interest and end the impunity of perpetrators.”

“We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall take all appropriate legal actions to compel your government to comply with our request in the public interest.”

“The allegations by both the Auditor-General and NEITI are different from a whistleblower’s claims that 48 million barrels of Bonny Light crude oil allegedly sold in China in 2015 are missing or unaccounted for.”

“The reports by the Auditor-General and NEITI suggest a grave violation of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended], and the country’s anticorruption laws and international obligations, as well as the public trust.”

“These damning revelations also suggest your government is failing to prevent and combat the plundering of Nigeria’s wealth and natural resources, name and bring suspected perpetrators to account and recover any proceeds of crime.”

“Poor and socio-economically vulnerable Nigerians have continued to pay the price for the stealing of the country’s oil wealth apparently by both state and non-state actors.”

“The country’s oil wealth ought to be used solely for the benefit of the Nigerian people, and for the sake of the present and future generations.”

“These allegations can promptly be investigated and suspected perpetrators named and shamed. Taking these steps would advance the right of Nigerians to restitution, compensation and guarantee of non-repetition and improve public confidence in the fight against corruption, and related crimes, especially in the oil sector.”

“According to the 2019 audited report by the Auditor General of the Federation (AGF), some 107,239,436.00 barrels of crude oil were lifted as domestic crude without any document or tracing.”

“To date, there is no information on the sale of Un-Utilized Crude oil by Refineries for 2019 and no information on crude oil allocations from 30th May to 31st December 2019. The Auditor-General is concerned that the missing crude oil may have been diverted.”

“The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) also reported missing 42.25 million barrels of crude oil in 2019.”

“Section 13 of the Nigerian Constitution imposes clear responsibility on your government to conform to, observe and apply the provisions of Chapter 2 of the Constitution. Section 15(5) imposes the responsibility on your government to ‘abolish all corrupt practices and abuse of power.’”

“Under Section 16(1) of the Constitution, your government has a responsibility to ‘secure the maximum welfare, freedom and happiness of every citizen on the basis of social justice and equality of status and opportunity.’ Section 16(2) further provides that, ‘the material resources of the nation are harnessed and distributed as best as possible to serve the common good.’”

“The UN Convention against Corruption and the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption to which Nigeria is a state party obligate your government to effectively prevent and investigate the plundering of the country’s wealth and natural resources and hold public officials and non-state actors to account for any violations.”

“Specifically, article 26 of the UN convention requires your government to ensure ‘effective, proportionate and dissuasive sanctions’ including criminal and non-criminal sanctions, in cases of grand corruption.”

“Article 26 complements the more general requirement of article 30, paragraph 1, that sanctions must take into account the gravity of the corruption allegations.”

“The proposed panel should be headed by a retired justice of the Supreme Court or Court of Appeal, and its members should include people with proven professional record, and of the highest integrity that can act impartially, independently, and transparently.”

PRESIDENT-ELECT’S SALLAH MESSAGE

We thank Munificent Allah for the grace to witness this year’s Eid-el-fitri celebration after the Holy Month of Ramadan.

For Muslims in our country and all over the world, Ramadan is a sacred spiritual obligation as one of the five pillars of Islam. With the help of Almighty Allah, we have gone through a period of abstinence, self-discipline, self-reflection, self-purification in gratitude and total submission to the will of Allah.

We have engaged in fervent prayers and supplications to Allah.

Beyond the self-abnegation and pious living that the fasting period imposed on us, the spiritual excercise we just concluded has also helped us to improve on our moral character, refine our minds in pursuit of higher ideals for which there should be no turning back.

At the heart of our faith and a major demand on all faithful is the requirement to commit ourselves to wholesome living. This entails love for one another, love for fellow humans regardless of creed, region and ethnicity, love for our communities and love for country.

To love one another, have compassion, empathy and love our beloved country means we must become better citizens in line with the teachings of Prophet Muhammed.

We must constantly seek to become a better version of ourselves in patriotism, dedication to duty and honesty. We must also never be weary of doing what is right, fair and just to all.

We are at the dawn of a Renewed Hope for a better, greater and a more prosperous Nigeria and I stand ready to walk with all Nigerians, young and old, male and female, with this opportunity to serve you in honour and dignity. This is a commitment that I have made and one in which we cannot afford to fail.

I wish all Muslims in Nigeria and beyond happy Sallah celebration.

SALLAH MESSAGE: PRESIDENT BUHARI HAILS PEACEFUL ELECTIONS, CALLS ON CITIZENS TO WORK HARDER TOWARDS TOLERANCE

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the peaceful outcome of the 2023 general elections”will go down on record as one of the proudest achievements of my administration in addition to our neutrality in the conduct of the elections.”

In his goodwill message to Muslims on the occasion of the Eid-el-fitr celebration to mark the end of the 30-day Ramadan fasting season, President Buhari explained that “the outcome of the elections were in line with my pledge to leave a legacy of free and fair elections.

“I’m proud that I have created a level playing field for all contestants regardless of party affiliation in order to produce a fair outcome for all.”

According to the President, “free and fair elections are the only principles that give credibility to our democracy, because the subversion of the will of the people undermines democracy itself.”

“The elections were so transparent that even members of the my own party were routed and unseated. At no point did I interfere with the process in order to give unfair advantage to anyone,” the President added.

On the Ramadan fast, President Buhari congratulated Muslims on successfully completing this demanding spiritual obligation.

While praying to Allah to reward the Muslims for their sacrifices during the fasting season, President Buhari advised that “we shouldn’t forget the important lessons of the Ramadan which includes improving our bond with the underprivileged and poor members of society.”

According to him, “abstention from food and drinks during the fasting period had made it possible for us to appreciate the situation of those who go without eating every day.”

We’ve connected communities with roads – Okowa

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on Thursday, said his administration had connected many communities in the state with roads and bridges spanning over 2,000 kilometres.

He said that the state government had also constructed drainage channels of the same magnitude as the roads in addition to storm water projects to check erosion and ensure durability and sustainability of the roads.

Okowa made this known while inaugurating Ugbolu-Akwukwu-Igbo road and Okpanam Bye-Pass, adjoining roads and discharge channels both in Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state.

He said that his administration had contributed to the growth of commerce in the communities due to the huge network of roads across the state, and lauded Deltans for their support and cooperation to his administration in the last eight years.

“For people who know this road as it used to be, I am sure that if you go through it now, you will find it very exciting.

“Beyond the road, there is a lot of economic impact because along this route, we have the Norsworthy farms, which is a very huge agricultural investment in oil palm.

“I believe that, that in itself is going to continually create jobs for our people, especially as the oil palm farm also has a refinery which is currently under construction,’’ he said.

The governor congratulated the communities for the infrastructure, and said “the best development you can bring to the people is to connect them to each other because it will continue to ensure growth of commerce.

“It will continue to ensure that industries are attracted as you already have one, the Norsworthy farm and Oil palm refinery already attracted along this route.

“I am glad to hear from the Commissioner for Works that they have about 58 road projects still awaiting inauguration. Of course, only a few will be inaugurated.

“But, the important thing is that a lot of roads have been paved for our people and we are happy that the people themselves continue to enjoy the connectivity between our various communities.

“Well over 2,000 kilometres of roads have been built by this administration and I know that a lot of drains to protect the roads have also been done.”

He added that his administration had done a lot in flood control measures in Asaba and Warri, and assured that the next administration would continue from where he would stop.

“We have done a lot in terms of storm water drainage but clearly within the Asaba community.

“We have not been able to complete all, especially in the Okotomi area of Okpanam, where we have not been able to get to in terms of flood control.

“But, we hope that our people will be patient with us. We will try to do the best that we can to reach all our people as much as we can and what we are not able to do, I am sure that the next administration will do that.

“The storm drainage in Asaba truly has helped a lot to control flood water in Asaba, and environs. And, I know that the one we are doing in Warri now is also nearing completion.

“We will continue to reassure our people that even as I exit from office next month, the next administration will continue with positive development of the,” Okowa stated.

Commissioner for Works, Mr Noel Omodon, said the Ugbolu-Akwukwu-Igbo Road spans 11.9km with a drainage length of 11.54km, while the Okpanam Bye-Pass comprised 4.79km Road and 12.96km drains with 13 adjoining roads.

He said the ministry had completed 58 road projects that were ready for inauguration and commended the contractors for doing a good job on the projects.

Earlier, Vice Chairman, Oshimili North Local Government Area, Hon. Uju Okolo commended Governor Okowa for his sterling accomplishments in the development of the area and the state in general.

Okowa constitutes handover committee, says membership not appointment

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has approved the constitution of Inauguration Committee to coordinate a smooth transition to the next administration in the state.

Announcing the constitution of the Committee at a news conference in Asaba, the Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, said the Committee headed by Secretary to the State Government, Chief Patrick Ukah, has the Permanent Secretary, Government House, Mr Eddy Ogidi-Gbegbaje, as Secretary.

He, however, stated that membership of the committee and sub-committees was not an automatic qualification for appointment into the next administration in the state, advising against “entitlement mentality” being associated with membership of the committee.

“You are very much aware that the Okowa administration is winding down and in about a month or couple of weeks, we will be heralding a new administration.

“As it is customary, we have put up a Committee to carry out a number of activities to ensure a smooth transition.

“What is trending in the Social Media is as if those who have been appointed into the main Committee and sub-committees have been given appointment in the new administration.

“We want to make it very clear that those appointed into the committees have only been asked to come and work for the purpose of seeing a smooth transition from the Okowa administration to the next administration.

“It does not mean that they are the ones that worked more than any other person. It does not also suggest that they are much more important than any other person.

“You know that if everybody who contributed to the success of the election were to be considered it means we will have a committee that will be more than a million,” he said.

Aniagwu appealed to party faithful who felt agitated for not being appointed into the committees to know that their assignment is just to midwife the process of a smooth transition.

“It doesn’t suggest that these persons who have been appointed have been automatically engaged by the new administration nor does it undermine the effort of every other person who did not see their names in the different committees.

“There are individuals who contributed very immensely to the success of the election and I can assure you that both the outgoing and incoming administrations take very serious cognisance of those efforts and in due course, the good Lord will instigate a process where they will be rewarded.

“Appointment into the Committee is just to midwife these processes that will culminate in the eventual handover to the next administration.

“So we appeal to our brothers to note that the Committee will not work in isolation and they will be reaching out to a number of people to assist them carry out the task,” he explained.

He urged Deltans to continue their support for the Okowa administration not only to May 29 but to the incoming Oborevwori administration adding that the success of Okowa will advance the state.
